A finiteness property of torsion points

چکیده
Let k be a number field, let E/k be an elliptic curve, and let S be a finite set of places of k containing the archimedean places. We prove that if α ∈ E(k) is nontorsion, then there are only finitely many torsion points ξ ∈ E(k)tors which are S-integral with respect to α. We also prove an analogue of this for the multiplicative group, and formulate conjectural generalizations for abelian varieties and dynamical systems.

Finiteness of the Moderate Rational Points of Once-punctured Elliptic Curves
— In the present paper, we prove the finiteness of the set of moderate rational points of a once-punctured elliptic curve over a number field. This finitenessmay be regarded as an analogue for a once-punctured elliptic curve of the well-known finiteness of the set of torsion rational points of an abelian variety over a number field. In order to obtain the finiteness, we discuss the center of th...
متن کاملGeometric Finiteness in Negatively Pinched Hadamard Manifolds
In this paper, we generalize Bonahon’s characterization of geometrically infinite torsion-free discrete subgroups of PSL(2,C) to geometrically infinite discrete torsionfree subgroups Γ of isometries of negatively pinched Hadamard manifolds X. We then generalize a theorem of Bishop to prove that every such geometrically infinite isometry subgroup Γ has a set of nonconical limit points with cardi...
متن کاملThe Geometric Finiteness Obstruction
The purpose of this paper is to develop a geometric approach to Wall's finiteness obstruction. We will do this for equivariant CW-complexes. The main advantage will be that we can derive all the formal properties of the equivariant finiteness obstruction easily from this geometric description. Namely, the obstruction property, homotopy invariance, the sum and product formulas, and the restricti...
متن کاملPeriodic Points on Veech Surfaces and the Mordell-weil Group over a Teichmüller Curve
Periodic points are points on Veech surfaces, whose orbit under the group of affine diffeomorphisms is finite. We characterise those points as being torsion points if the Veech surfaces is suitably mapped to its Jacobian or an appropriate factor thereof. For a primitive Veech surface in genus two we show that the only periodic points are the Weierstraß points and the singularities. Our main too...
متن کاملTorsion Points And
We study the behavior of the greatest common divisor of a k − 1 and b k − 1, where a, b are fixed integers or polynomials, and k varies. In the integer case, we conjecture that when a and b are multiplicatively independent and in addition a− 1 and b − 1 are coprime, then a k − 1 and b k − 1 are coprime infinitely often. In the polynomial case, we prove a strong version of this conjecture. To do...
